1. a secret society organized in Ireland about 1843 for resisting payment of rent during the famine. Its members disguised themselves as women when attacking rent collectors and other officials.
2. a group in the mining regions of Pennsylvania, formed to press the cause of the miners against the abuses of the owners, suppressed in 1877.
